One night I was up late surfing the internet just trying to relax and I decided to see who was currently online in my city, the search returned only one name. I sent this person an IM just saying “Hi” … little did I know that I was starting a ball rolling that would eventually roll right down the aisle! I will be sharing our story of a short engagement, planning a lovely wedding in only 6 months, and our point of view as we approach our tenth anniversary.

I wanted the guest list to be completed early on, because I knew it would affect ordering favors, invitations, and thank-you cards. Since my family is so large, I knew right from the beginning that we would have a long wedding guest list. Luckily, this didn’t make the wedding too expensive because Brian’s family happens to be tiny. So they kind of balanced each other out!

One of the most creative ideas I had for our wedding was creating our own wedding invitations. I had been to a few bridal supply stores in town that specialized in invitations and just wasn’t impressed with what I saw. Plus, once everything was ordered it would be quite expensive. So, I decided to make my own wedding invitations.

Being frugal has always been a hobby of mine. We were able to have our wedding for just a little over $2,000. I was raised to always think a little out of the box and think of different ways to do things that were much cheaper. So, how did we pull off a wedding for around $2,000?

One of the most daunting things for a new bride to do is to get her name changed on all of her documents and pieces of identification. All in all the process was not nearly as complicated as I had feared that it would be. Here are just a few of the simple things that I did to get this process done.

Choosing our reception site was definitely a long process. It was a big project, but the second we signed the contract I felt relieved. The reception venue is such a large chunk of the wedding planning, and it’s nice to get it out of the way as soon as possible. I was very happy with my choice.

There is no way to pick a date that works for everyone and I knew that absences were unavoidable. Here are a couple of hints on what I did to share our wedding pictures quickly, without spending a large amount of money.

You’ve always heard the old saying - “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.” Well, I was always the harpist, never the bride. I’ve played for weddings for over 20 years. Then one day I met the most perfect man for me. We lived very close to each other, but our paths never seemed to cross.

I had always wanted a fall wedding. Fall is my favorite season (as well as Brian’s), and I had always thought that the decorative options for fall weddings were gorgeous. Since I am very close to my out of state family members, I knew that a summer wedding would allow me to spend more time with them.

After our wedding ceremony was over, we had cake and punch with all of our guests at my grandmother’s house. This gathering was nice, but it was not our actual wedding reception. We invited our very closest friends and family members to my sister’s house and had a traditional fourth of July barbecue planned for the evening, the perfect alternative to a lavish budget-busting wedding reception.
