Choosing The Bridal Party and Other Helpers

Billy shows the ushers what to do Determining the people that will share your day with you is a very important task. My fiancé, Billy, and I discussed it quite extensively.

I knew from the time that I was young that my older sister would be my maid/matron of honor. So, that was easy. I had several friends growing up, but none that would be able to be included as bridesmaids due to other commitments.

Billy on the other hand had several people he had on the list to include. It was decided that his old college roommate would be his best man. We debated for quite a while if he was going to have any groomsmen, but since I didn’t have any bridesmaids the decision was made.

After attending many weddings, I knew it was important to have a balance in the bridal party. It won’t look extremely odd during the entrance, but when the wedding has ended and the bridal party exits, who wants to be the girl or guy left to walk by themselves?

Billy ended up asking the other friends to be ushers. Since we were paying for the dresses and other expenses this was a big cost savings to have a small bridal party. I had two nephews, aged 4 and 2, who served as the ring bearers and a niece aged 3 that was the flower girl.

I’m glad that all the kids were mature enough even at a young age to handle this responsibility. I was worried a little about the flower girl, but she ended up doing just fine! Having two ring bearers also was a neat touch and looked very cute.

I had a college friend that handled the guest registry for us and Billy’s sister did the lighting of the candles. I hadn’t remembered to appoint someone to light the candles, but she stepped right in and took control. Thank goodness!

During the reception I had two older friends help with the punch and the bride’s cake. My fiancĂ©’s aunt served the groom’s cake. Since we had a smaller wedding not as many helpers were needed, but all handled their tasks with the upmost care. I greatly appreciated all their help.
