What Type Of Fillers Should You Use For Your Wedding Flowers?
Not all wedding floral pieces have fillers in between the flowers. Some pieces just have the main flowers themselves and those can be very pretty in their simplicity. However most pieces do use some type of fillers to round out the arrangement and fill in spots that you’d like covered.
Fillers can be anything that you put in the floral piece beside the main flowers, such as, leaves, ribbon, tulle, smaller flowers, or even decorative picks. Let’s examine each filler so you can see what your options are.
♦ Leaves are always good in floral pieces because they naturally go well with the flowers. You can use fern leaves which are perfect for small roses, or a thicker heavier leaf for larger blooms. Eucalyptus leaves can be gotten in a variety of colors and can also add a dramatic effect to your bouquets.
♦ Ribbon can be used in a couple different ways. You’ve seen bouquets where there is ribbon hanging from the bottom which is very pretty, but try adding small filler flowers with glue to the hanging ribbon at intervals of a few inches and see how much prettier it can be.
You can also make little bows of ribbon tied to florist picks to place in the bouquets in between the flowers, and/or have a larger bow at the bottom of the bouquet. One of my best designs was for a wedding with brown/tan/taupe colors and the bridesmaids bouquets consisted of tiny tea roses with a waterfall of small bows at the bottom. It was gorgeous.
♦ Tulle or illusion netting makes a great filler in between your main flowers. Take the tulle material and cut out several round coffee can size layers, gather them in the middle and secure by using a florist pick and wrapping the wire around a part you’ve pinched from the middle. Once secure you can spread the tulle out and insert it in the bouquet.
♦ Smaller flowers like Queens Anne’s Lace, Stephanotis, or Baby’s Breath make wonderful fillers. Many florists even glue small pearls in the middles of the Stephanotis. You can even incorporate dried fillers into the pieces such as gypsum. It’s similar to Baby’s Breath and comes in all sorts of colors. I have to warn you though as gypsum kind of stinks unless it’s been aired out for a long while.
♦ Don’t discount decorative picks. Those can be a variety of decorative things that are made attached to the body of a small plastic stick. I found some really great ones for my own bridal bouquet that were clusters of pearls. They looked so pretty in the bouquet.
There are so many choices and so many beautiful ways to fill up your wedding floral pieces. Take your time, go to your local craft store and see what’s available. You’re sure to find something you love.
