Flowers, Invitations, and the Icing on the Cake

When it came to picking flowers and decorations, we didn’t have a theme in mind so much as a feeling. So far with the dresses and tuxes we had a black and white color scheme going. I could still pick any other color to go with it and it would still work. We just wanted a feeling of simple elegance and decided to stay with the main palette of white.

My bouquet was an elegant arrangement of roses, with trailing ivy as an accent. I have always loved ivy, and I think it made a perfect, natural touch. My attendants carried calla lily bouquets, and the groomsmen had calla lily boutonnieres. It was beautiful!

Our wedding cake decorated with real flowers and basket weave icing After I got done deciding on flowers I moved right on to discussing the wedding cake, because they were going to be handled by the same place… a local grocery store Buehler’s in Wadsworth Ohio.

Now this was one of the nicer grocery stores in the area, but it still might not be the first place you would think of to plan your wedding. I would not have thought of it either, but a friend of mine pointed it out as a possibility.

They not only had a full blown florist on site, but they had the bakery as well. We ended up with gorgeous white cake with a basket weave icing, again simple but elegant.

By getting the cake and flowers in the same place we saved the mark up from two different suppliers. Whenever you can, combine multiple purchases from one supplier and you will usually save money.

After I had picked the flowers I had finally gotten around to looking for invitations. Skipping the expensive stationary store, I picked one of the many mail order places from Bride’s magazine and saved over 200.00.  My Wedding was a few years ago, so the name of the catalog company escapes me, but there are several full service type companies in all the wedding magazines.  Often you will get a larger selection from a catalog as well. I was very happy when I found a beautiful white invitation with an embossed ivy border.

This same catalog company had all the other bells, whistles and do dads you might want for a wedding. I got our unity candle set, our wine glasses, a guest book with a ceramic cover, even our Mickey and Minnie Mouse cake topper and a stationary for the wedding programs that had white roses and ivy … I was ecstatic!

It is crazy how something as simple as a pretty piece of paper can make you so happy, but when you are piecing together a dream, everything matters.
