How to Choose Your Wedding Cake With So Many New Ideas Coming Out Every Day
There are many decisions to make when choosing your wedding cake. Here are some considerations,
Shape
♦ Round
♦ Square
♦ Scalloped or Petal
♦ Hexagonal
♦ Topsy-Turvy
♦ Heart
♦ Combination of two or more shapes
♦ Cup Cake Tree
♦ Doughnut Tree
Flavor
♦ Chocolate
♦ Vanilla
♦ Lemon
♦ Coconut
♦ Orange
♦ Strawberry
♦ Marble
♦ Red Velvet
♦ Carrot
♦ Apple
♦ Raspberry
♦ Pumpkin
♦ Banana
Those flavors are just a short list of the flavors that are available. Then you can also have fillings in between the wedding cake layers and those come also in many flavors.
Cake Finish
♦ Butter cream
♦ Fondant – Gives a completely smooth finish as a background to the decorations
Decorations
♦ Fresh Flowers
♦ Sugar Flowers
♦ Basket Weave
♦ Scroll
♦ Dots
♦ Ribbons and bows
These are not complete lists, as every bakery comes out with new ideas for wedding cakes every day. So if these short lists make your head swim wait until you actually visit the bakeries.
Make a list of bakeries that you want to visit. Ask your married friends and relatives for recommendations and then call the bakeries to make an appointment for cake tasting. You want your wedding cake to look beautiful and taste like a bit of heaven.
Years ago cake tiers were separated by pillars and sometimes had fountains in the middle of them. The trend now is to have a fondant finish and the layers flush on top of one another. Cake tops have changed also. Many couples are choosing a sculpture with initials, or a simple bow or group of flowers instead of the classic bride and groom.
Cake tables are more decorated these days to match the cake decor as though it were an extension of the cake. The latest fad is to forgo the traditional wedding cake and have a cupcake tree, doughnut tree, or danish tree. I have even seen a White Castle burger tree, a Twinkie tree, a Suzy Q tree, and an Oreo tree.
It’s your wedding and you can have any style cake that you both like. I would like to make one observation about the cake cutting, and that is a lot of couples like to smash the wedding cake into each others faces. I suppose it’s OK if it’s just a little bit around the mouth, but I have seen this to the extent that the cake is ground into the hair and the gown and tux.
Here’s my take and mind you it’s just my opinion, but it’s a childish practice and I can’t help think that there’s some real hostility under it all. I mean why ruin an expensive gown? Twenty five years ago I paid a makeup artist $100 to do my makeup and there’s no way I was going to have cake smashed in my face only to wash the makeup off and look bad for the rest of my photos.
Not to mention the time you’ll spend away from your party to be in the bathroom trying to wash the cake off. Plus the grooms tux is usually rented. It’s up to you two of course to decide how to handle your cake cutting and this should be discussed before the wedding.
