Making My Own Wedding Flower Arrangements
When I got quotes from a few local florists, I found that it would cost me over a thousand dollars to get fresh flowers for my wedding. Since this was simply not something I could afford, I began to think about using silk flowers for my wedding day.
My cousin had recently gotten married and used silk flowers, and they were gorgeous. My aunt was extremely crafty, so I asked her if she would be willing to help me make silk flower arrangements for my wedding. She was happy to help, but unfortunately, we were not able to find a time where we were both available to work on the project. She lives about four hours away and owns her own business, and I was busy with work, school, and other wedding planning adventures.
As the wedding date continued to approach, I decided to take a risk. I had never done any kind of floral arrangement work before, and I certainly didn’t know anything about types of flowers or even where to begin. I wrote down how many bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, and arrangements I would need and then took my mom and my checkbook to a craft store.
I filled my cart with all kinds of flowers. I knew I wanted my bouquet to be white, and the bridesmaid bouquets to be pink with touches of white. I picked out pink and white flowers that caught my eye, and then picked up stems of ‘filler’ flowers that looked just like baby’s breath. I also got some large white flowers that looked like they would be perfect for boutonnieres.
The little bit of research I had tried to do online told me one thing: I would need floral wire and floral tape. I was happy to see that these items came in shades of green, so they would blend in with the flower stems. I picked up several rolls of the wire and tape and brought my goods home.
For the next week or so, my bedroom floor was covered in flowers, leaves, and stems. I had to redo some of the bouquets a few times before I was happy with the results, but the flowers were pretty and I had saved a ton of money!
I wrapped the bouquets with the floral wire and tape, and they stayed secure. I made enough bouquets for all of my bridesmaids, one for me, and then an arrangement for the ceremony and for the cake table. I had a friend come over and help me make the corsages and boutonnieres, and for those I just used the flowers I got and the leaves left over from the stems I had trimmed.
“Now when I look at my wedding pictures and see the flowers, I feel pride in my creations. I also feel pride in knowing that in order to save a lot of money, I was able to try my hand at something I had never done before. That feeling was worth even more than the few hundred dollars in my pocket!”
