How I Was Able To Make Pretty and Cost Effective Wedding Bouquets
Before I tell you about the flowers for our wedding, I first need to let you in on some background information on myself. I am not your typical girl… I am not really a big fan of receiving flowers. I am not sure why but to me, having someone spend money on flowers that are just going to die in a few days was not something that I thought of as romantic.
I don’t know if there are others out there like me… but flowers just don’t do it for me. I have always said that if I had to receive flowers, I prefer the wildflowers that someone took the time to pick rather than just calling them in and having some lady on the other end sign a card for them. Like I said, I am not your typical girl.
“That being said… It was obvious to myself that I did not want to spend a whole lot of money on wedding bouquets of real flowers that were going to wilt in the hot, humid July heat and then dry up and die a few days later. I knew that I would use silk flowers and make the wedding bouquets and boutonnieres myself so that I could save money, and have a few to keep as a memento of our wedding day.”
I lucked into a great budget saving sale when a local craft store held a 75% of sale on silk flowers! I was able to find pink roses that matched the shade of pink for the wedding perfectly and white rosettes to make the guys boutonnieres out of.
I then purchased two rolls of green florists tape, and 4 yards of wide silk ribbon. I spent a total of $25 on the flowers and the supplies for the wedding! Every once in a while you luck into a great sale, usually later into the summer months, that can really save you an amazing amount of money.
I took the pink flowers and bound them together with the green florists tape, and then wrapped the wide ribbon around the stems. I used a hot glue gun to help secure the ribbon into place by placing a bead of it at the top, middle and end so that it did not come loose. I tied the remaining ribbon into a loose bow that hung down from the wedding bouquets. They turned out to be very pretty, easy to put together, and cost effective.
Now that the wedding day is over and done, I have done a few things with the flowers to help us remember the day. I framed one of the silk flowers in a shadow box and hung it in our bedroom on the wall. I have put a small wedding bouquet of them in a glass vase with marbles in the bottom and set them on my desk so that I can see them everyday. Now not only is this a great reminder of our special day, but it is a nice way to add color to my desk… without having to water them or worry about killing them with my distinctly black thumb!
