Our BBQ Wedding Reception With a Bang – No Better Ending To Our Wedding Day!
After our wedding ceremony was over, we had cake and punch with all of our guests at my grandmother’s house. This gathering was nice, but it was not our actual wedding reception. We invited our very closest friends and family members to my sister’s house, which is only about five miles from my grandmother’s. My sister was kind enough to volunteer her home for this occasion because our house was 35 miles away and we did not want our guests to have to travel so far.
We had a traditional fourth of July barbecue planned for the evening. We grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, had chips, pasta salad, fruit, desserts, and drinks. We had lawn games set up for adults and kids alike to participate in and chairs set out for those who wanted to just sit and visit. It was a lot of fun to spend time playing games like croquet and lawn golf with the kids on our big day.
Our small wedding reception barbecue was the perfect alternative to a lavish budget-busting wedding reception. Robert and I did not have to plaster on fake smiles and wade through long greeting lines during our wedding reception. I did not have to worry about my feet or my back hurting while I was wearing uncomfortable wedding shoes… I got to run around in a sundress and sandals, having fun with those who meant the most to us.
Our barbecue was wonderful, very relaxed and casual. Most of the older family members choose to leave before dark, however, a few of us hung around to celebrate the Fourth of July and our wedding day with a BANG! Robert and the boys went to a local fireworks stand a few days before and had purchased enough firepower to put on a real show.
We set fireworks off for the next three hours, it was wonderful. At dusk, the kids were able to do sparklers and smoke bombs (with our help of course). Then when it got really dark Robert and the other older guys set off the big fireworks while kids cuddled up on laps under blankets to watch.
There was no better ending to our wedding day if I would have had a million dollar budget. There is something so incredibly romantic and beautiful about watching a dark night sky light up with brilliant colors and shapes. I am a kid at heart and fireworks are one of my favorite things in the world. I loved the fact that we ended our wedding day with special friends and our own private fireworks show.
