Our Wedding Reception – We Ate, We Laughed, We Danced
It is funny, because before I wrote these posts, I did not realize how little I actually knew about the planning of my wedding. Between my parents, my friends, and my in-laws to be I really did not have to do much of the head work involved with the planning.
I got to handle all the things that had to do with my wants, like my dress, flowers, and photographer but everything else was kind of magically done for us. I think in a way it was a form of a present to Justin and me.
Our wedding reception was a nice non-stuffy affair held at the local police lodge. We had around 175 guests who were a lovely mix of people from our pasts and present. I felt like we were playing ‘This is your life’.
We got to see everyone from out of town friends and family, to teachers from our middle school days… it was great! It was such a whirlwind, I wish there was actually more time to interact with our guests.
We served the standard pasta dish and chicken dish, but it was good home style cooking. We had the women’s auxiliary of a local Hungarian club do the catering so you know it was some good food! We supplied the table coverings, other than that these wonderful ladies supplied everything from the food, to the knives and forks.
We decided to go with a DJ for the reception. Bands are nice, but they can easily be too loud especially in a small venue. I also like hearing original artists when you are wanting to hear ‘your song’. Since we could not afford Aerosmith to play at our wedding we had to settle for a DJ.
Now most people (including me at first), kind of made a face when we told them that our first dance song was by Aerosmith. My hubby-to-be said that he wanted to pick the song for our first dance and I thought that it was romantic that he wanted to handle something so sentimental.
He decided on “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. It was not a traditional choice, but it was perfect for us. It is actually a very moving song. The only thing is that I told the DJ to fade it out towards the end where Steven Tyler starts shrieking a little, in true Steven Tyler fashion.
Let me throw in another word of caution garnered from my experience. When you have a particular song or songs in mind, bring the CD’s WITH YOU!
We had a last minute change to the DJ who was supposed to be there that night. The new guy did not know the list of songs we wanted to play until he got there that night. This almost ruined our plans for our first dance, the father daughter dance, ….
Luckily between all the people in attendance we pieced together the songs we needed from CD’s in their cars and the couple the DJ did have. The crisis was averted, but just almost, so plan ahead!
We ate, we laughed, we danced… yes even the chicken dance and the electric slide. The bartender was a friend of ours. It was fun having someone you know serving one minute and dancing with the crowd the next. He was great!
I told him I did not drink much myself, but that I wanted one glass of champagne for our toast. I had told him once that I always thought drinks with those little umbrellas were cute. Right before we had our first toast he ran out of nowhere and popped a little bamboo umbrella into my glass, it was hilarious!
It all seemed to end in a flash. I wanted it to last longer, but I probably would not have lasted much longer myself.
