Picking Out Our Wedding Flowers – Calla Lilies, Hydrangeas, Stephanotis
Flowers can be one of the biggest expenses for a wedding. My mother and I went to a few different florists in town and had huge estimates of what the bill would be. I knew this wouldn’t work.
We ended up finding a florist in a small town nearby that was more reasonable on prices, but even then we couldn’t afford all we wanted.
I had first decided that I wanted larkspur flowers at our wedding. I found a very pretty arrangement on the Internet. I’m glad that I looked up what the flowers meant though before I went to the florist. Larkspur means fickle. I didn’t want to be known as a fickle person… so I did some additional looking.
I then picked out calla lilies as my main wedding flower with hydrangeas as the complimentary flowers. My wedding bouquet and my sister’s bouquet had all fresh flowers – calla lilies, hydrangea and a mixture of other flowers.
The corsages too had all fresh flowers. The ladies had corsages of stephanotis and hydrangeas, while the men had corsages of a single calla lily. Those were the only flowers that the florist handled. Click the picture to see my bouquet and the corsages more in detail.
The church where we got married had steps leading up to the top of the stage. My sister had recently purchased a house and needed some flowers, so we went to Lowe’s Home Improvement on the day before our wedding and purchased real potted plants of hydrangeas and potted calla lilies.
These went on the steps. There was no expense to me since she would be using them in her landscaping – perfect! The potted plants actually had triple duty. Not only were they used during the wedding and for my sister’s landscaping, they also were used during the reception.
On the top of the landing of the stage I had two ceramic pillars that I had in my college days. I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased large vases (during their 50% off sale) and long stemmed silk calla lilies. I filled the bottom of the vases with clear marbles.
Then at the back of the stage area I had two larger pillars… also purchased at Hobby Lobby on sale… that held two silk calla lily arrangements that our church had in their retired floral area.
The pillars with the vases holding the silk calla lilies are used in my dining room to this day and are one of my favorite decorating items. I also kept my wedding bouquet and put it in a display case that sits in our bedroom.
The total expense for our wedding flowers was $510. Of that $465 was for fresh flowers and the other $45 was for the silk flowers. We didn’t have a huge amount of fresh flowers, but I feel that what we did have was sufficient.
