Preparation Guidelines For Creating Your Own Silk Wedding Flower Arrangements
You’ve made the brave decision to make your own silk wedding flower arrangements for your special day. What is the first step? The first thing you need to do is to look at corsages, boutonnieres, and bouquets to get an idea of what they look like and what you might like to incorporate into your wedding.
Look at wedding photos of friends and relatives. Visit some florists and look at their samples and books. Use the Internet and look up wedding flowers and bouquets on photo sharing sites, and florist websites.
At first you’ll probably just be seeing the types of flowers and the colors, but try to notice things like, how close the flower heads are to each other, how much of the stems are showing, what if any, kinds of fillers are they using, and how many flowers are used in each piece as related to size.
Now that you have an idea of what you are going to create, let’s talk about tools and the other things you will need to have to make your pieces.
♦ Pair of wire cutters. Most silk flowers stems have wire inside of them. Using wire cutters makes the job quicker and easier, but if you don’t have them scissors will do. If you use scissors what you will do is to cut the green plastic of the stem all around the wire inside and then simply bend the wire back and forth. After a few bends the wire will weaken and break apart for you.
♦ Pair of sharp scissors for cutting small stems on fillers and ribbon if used
♦ If you are not making hand tied bouquets you will need bouquet holders. These are plastic pieces with handles that have Styrofoam to put the flowers in.
♦ If you will be making wrist corsages you will need holders for those too. They consist of an elastic band to go around the wrist and metal clips to hold the flowers.
♦ Have some hot glue or white craft glue on hand. You will want to secure heavier, longer stems to the foam for added strength.
♦ Pearl straight pins for bouts and corsages.
♦ Green florist tape.
♦ Green wire florist picks. These look like thick toothpicks with wire wrapped around one end.
Those are the basics of the materials you’ll need outside of the flowers and fillers. You can get all these things at any large or well stocked craft store.
