You Don’t Have to Be a Florist to Work With Silk Flowers
Silk flowers may look delicate, but trust me when I say that you can do a lot with them and still have them be beautiful. What makes this project of creating your own wedding flowers scary is lack of confidence which is understandable.
They are for your wedding, one of the most important days of your life and you don’t want any mistakes or anything that can go wrong. You also may be leery about spending money on the silk flowers and then finding out you can’t do it. I’d like to put your minds at ease and tell you a few things about working with silk flowers.
“Oh no, a piece of the flower head has fallen off!”
You may get home from purchasing your flowers and notice that a piece of the flower head has fallen off. You can fix that easily by just having a look and popping it back on. You can also use a spot of glue if it seems loose to you, but that is rarely if ever, necessary.
“Oh no, I have a soiled silk flower!”
You may be afraid that too much handling of the silks make soil the lighter color flowers, but you needn’t worry about that. If you come across a soiled silk flower or flowers all you have to do is to swish them in some warm soapy water and rinse and let drip dry.
The soap I use is just dish washing liquid and I use it for the silk arrangements I have around my house. Every few months I just swish, rinse, and dry. They are as pretty today as they were when I bought them a couple years ago.
“Oh no, I’ve cut the stem too short!”
One of the scariest parts of working with the silks is that since most flowers come on long stems, you will have to cut them down at some point. You probably will feel unsure about where to cut them and if you don’t cut to the right size, then what? This is very easy to remedy.
If you haven’t cut enough off, then you’ve only wasted a cut, and can try again a little shorter this time. What happens though if you’ve cut it too short? The answer is you lengthen it again and here’s how. You will reattach the piece you’ve cut off by overlapping the two pieces by an inch or so and just using floral tape, wrap around the severed parts.
If it doesn’t feel stable to you then you can also take one of the green wooden floral picks and place that with the two end pieces you’ve overlapped. Then just use the wire from the pick to wrap it around and then put some floral tape over it. The stem will be hidden in the bouquet so you won’t see your repair, and the flowers stem is made whole again.
Don’t be afraid to use the silk flowers they are much hardier than you think.
