Wedding Bouquet Styles – No Right Or Wrong

Posted by Kathleen on Thursday, September 11th, 2008 in Wedding Flowers

There are almost as many wedding bouquet styles as there are types of silk flowers. This is because, unlike years ago, there are no bouquet rules you must follow. I’ve listed some of the different styles of wedding bouquets below along with their descriptions to help you choose the style that’s right for you and your wedding.

Cascade Bouquets. These elegant floral arrangements are shaped somewhat like a cascade or waterfall with the flowers flowing loosely downward over the bride’s hands. Teardrop Bouquets are just like the cascade except that the middle bottom hanging down is tighter and pointed.

♦ Crescent Bouquets are shaped like a crescent with the longer blooms to the right and to the left of center, with none hanging from the middle. This arrangement is sometimes also called the European design. Note that one side is usually longer by a couple inches than the other.

Arm Bouquets are made up of long stem flowers and are carried cradled in the arms. It is also known as the pageant or presentation bouquet.

Pomander Bouquets are actually balls covered with flowers. They have a ribbon attached to be worn around the wrist.

Hand Tied Bouquets which are the current flower trend, are simply a group of flowers that are gathered together and tied with ribbon at the stems.

Fan Bouquets can be made with actual fans where the flowers are attached near the base of the fan, or they can just be a group of flowers tied together in the shape of a fan. Craft stores carry pretty white and ivory lace fans for just such a bouquet.

♦ Parasol Bouquets are not very popular anymore but they consist of pretty lace parasols that can be carried open or closed with flowers attached.

Purse Bouquets. These are very unique, I have seen only one wedding with these but I thought the idea was pretty cool. It was made of a small purse that had flowers all over it covering the purse and a small chain or ribbon handle. This way the bride can carry a few personal things with her and yet it looks just like a form of pomander bouquet.

Biedermeier Bouquets consist of concentric rings of flowers. The rings are each just one type and color flower so that it looks extremely organized and planned out.

Scepter Bouquets are made of flowers placed at the top of long wands that are usually very decorated and ornamental.

Nosegay Bouquets are small round clusters of flowers. Round Bouquets are similar to Nosegays but are larger and can be in bouquet holders. A Posy Bouquet is another small round bouquet made with roundish flowers.

Note that some bouquets can even be put in more than one category like a posy which can be a handtied bouquet, for example. Note also that there might be so little difference in some bouquet styles that if you want to create your own bouquets it would be difficult for you to construct the differences.

But remember this… even though the hand tied flowers are the current trend think about all these other shapes and ideas and choose what makes you the happiest. Flowers are so beautiful that no matter what you do to them they will stay beautiful. Remember there is no right or wrong!

What about you? Did you use one of the bouquet styles listed above? Did you make your wedding bouquet yourself? Feel free to share your experience via the comments box below.

You have certainly offered a lot of different ways to come down the aisle with a lovely bunch of flowers. I, myself, had a cascade bouquet and just loved it. There really are so many choices nowadays and creativity and out of the box thinking are always neat to see.
