What To Look For When Buying Your Silk Flowers
There are two ways you can purchase your silk flowers to create your own wedding pieces. The first is to attempt to get them at a wholesale florist supplier. If you have a tax number from a business you already own you can use that to get your flowers.
Some suppliers may sell you flowers if you agree to pay the tax on them at the time of purchase without a tax number. You will have to find a supplier in your area and ask them about that. Some others will only sell to florists or businesses with tax numbers.
You can look for suppliers on the Internet, however I don’t recommend this because the true beauty, color, and detail, cannot be seen from online photos, no matter how good the pictures are. You really have to see them in person.
If you can buy your flowers this way they will be cheaper because you have to buy them in bulk by the dozens, and if it’s a large wholesaler you will have more to choose from. The down side of buying them this way is that many wholesalers have minimum order requirements ranging from $100 and up.
The second method of purchasing the flowers is to go to a retail craft store that has a large selection of blooms. You will pay a little more for each piece, but you only have to buy what you need. You also will be able to bring with you a color swatch to match flowers to dresses. Or you can just buy one flower and take it home to see how the color matches.
Whatever method of purchase you choose, you will surely be overwhelmed by the variety and assortment of flowers and colors that exist. I would strongly advise you to make your first visit a sort of window shopping one. You can always go back in the next day or two after the initial visit to make your purchases. This will give you a chance to plan better and think about what you’ve seen vs. what you want.
I feel fairly confident in saying that not all silk flowers are actually made of silk. In fact if you think about it silk is a very delicate and light fabric, and would not work well as a flower. The fact is when silk flowers were first made they were made of silk, but they were expensive and not very real looking. Most today are made of silk screened polyester and some are even hand painted to look as close to the real thing as possible.
When purchasing your flowers the main thing to look for is the realism. You want them to look like fresh flowers as much as possible. In your photos after the wedding people shouldn’t be able to tell them from the real thing.
