Our Wedding Night on the Banks of a Canal
Justin and I did not want to leave on our honeymoon the very next day after the wedding. Several friends and family members had flown in to share our special day and we wanted to stay in town to visit with them.
What we decided to do might also take the place of a full blown honeymoon if you are on a tight budget. My Mom got us a very nice suite in a hotel in a neighboring city. I had never been in a suite style hotel room before and this hotel was a Sheraton so it was very nice.
The room was so decked out it even had an upstairs, it may even had more square footage than my house. This Sheraton was built on the banks of a canal, so it had a lovely view as well.
The best part about having a suite was that there was room to invite some friends to hang out with us after the reception. It was so nice to be able to sit and unwind with a smaller group of loved ones.
We brought some of the food, drinks and cake from the reception with us to the suite so we were all set in the food department. I did try and get one special food item for our wedding night, but it did not work out too well.
I am sharing this part as a word of warning. I wanted to get my husband his favorite cheesecake from a local restaurant. It is normally a luscious cheesecake topped with huge, whole strawberries in glaze.
When we got back to the suite and opened the box, that is not what I found. Contained in this unassuming white box was the messiest pile of red glop I think I had ever seen.
If I did not know what was supposed to be in that box I would not have had a clue. Well what I did not know is that when this restaurant makes their cheesecakes out of strawberry season they use commercial, pre-made glop.
I wanted to cry, but my new hubby hugged me and said not to worry about it, then we looked at the glop and started laughing. The moral of the story is to be aware of the season your wedding is in when you are planning special extras like food items.
Our friends stayed for an hour or so before calling it a night. I think by this time it was only midnight or one in the morning, but it felt like it was a lot later. The events of the day and the weeks of planning beforehand were fun, but they were also exhausting.
Once everybody left we decided to partake of another perk of the hotel room which was a whirlpool bath tub. It was an excellent treat for our tired bodies. A couple could easily turn a hotel like this into a mini honeymoon.
