How Our Wedding Party Dress Code Helped to Set The Tone
Once our wedding party was selected, we had to figure out what the wedding party dress code would be for the wedding ceremony. My own dress was not incredibly formal and Robert was planning to wear a simple attire of Khaki dress pants, long sleeve button up white shirt and tie. We knew that in the muggy Missouri heat of July anything more than that outside would make him uncomfortable and hot.
Naturally, the wedding party was asked to dress much the same. The two groomsmen that Robert had chosen were asked to simply wear khaki pants, white dress shirt and tie also. I decided against picking out a dress for the girls and getting them each their own, that likely would hang in the back of their closets for the next five years. I have been in weddings were the bride says that she picked out a dress that we would all love and would all wear again… but mine has never seen the light of day again.
I told each of the girls to find a summer dress in any style that they wanted… I told them that the flower girl dresses were white with pink and mint green detail. Both Cassie and Julie worked off of this and found dresses that fit their own personal tastes and body types to ensure that they felt both comfortable and beautiful. It also ensured that they each had a dress that they will in fact wear again someday.
The younger members of our wedding party were our children and their outfits fit in with the rest of the bridal party’s. Both of the boys wore khaki pants, and matching green shirts and ties that we purchased surprisingly enough on walmart.com. The girls dresses were my absolute favorite! My grandmother found them on clearance at Kmart after Easter at 50% off the original sticker price.
The dress code of the wedding party really helped to set the tone for the rest of the wedding, beautiful yet casual. Many brides are now moving towards having their wedding party choose their own dresses. Often times the bride will choose a color and ask that her bridesmaids will select a dress of her choice in this color in an effort to make the wedding party more comfortable.
In fact, David’s Bridal now offers an entire line of mix and match pieces for the wedding party in an effort to coordinate colors and fabrics with the style of dress that best suits each bridesmaids body type. Where was that idea when I was forced to wear a nightmare of a bridesmaid dress several years ago??? I was not about to do that to my girls, and I was very pleased with the results.
