Wedding Responsibilities: Who Does What?
Since almost everyone in our wedding party had never been in a wedding before, I was a little concerned that no one would be aware of their wedding responsibilities. I didn’t want to seem like a psycho bride by emailing attachments of responsibility lists to everyone in our bridal party, but I had to find a way to make sure everyone was aware of what they needed to do.
All our best man would have to do is throw a bachelor party, hang onto my ring, and take Brian’s tuxedo back to the store when the wedding was over with.
My maid of honor, however, had many more jobs. She was in charge of Brian’s ring and my bachelorette party as well, but was also my main go-to person when it came to choosing attendant wear. She also had the responsibility of planning my wedding shower, even though she got help with that. Luckily, I didn’t have to feel controlling by sending her a list of responsibilities, because she asked me to!
Since the groom’s parents are typically responsible for the rehearsal dinner, they took care of that detail – and the rehearsal dinner was wonderful! However, every wedding is different. In many cases, the bride and groom take care of the rehearsal dinner, and other traditional responsibilities may be changed or switched around.
“It’s a good idea to make everyone aware of what their duties are in the beginning of the planning process, so that there are no surprises. Before accepting the roles of maid of honor, best man, or rehearsal dinner planners, all parties should know what is expected of them and then decide if they will be able to contribute the time, energy, and sometimes money that it costs to fulfill all of their responsibilities. As is true in many wedding planning situations, communication works best.”
