Changing My Name After Our Wedding - Not as Complicated as I Had Feared

One of the most daunting things for a new bride to do is to get her name changed on all of her documents and pieces of identification. Here are just a few of the simple things that I did to get this process done.

First, I had to wait to receive my official copy of our marriage license in the mail. Our officiant was in charge of signing and mailing the copy into the courthouse and then our county recorder sent us a copy with the county seal stamped upon it. I could do nothing until I had this document.

After I received my official copy my first stop was to go to the local Social Security office. I had to fill out a paper stating that my name had changed and requesting a new social security card with my married name on it.  I had to present my driver’s license as identification as well as my official marriage license as proof of my name change.

I was also able to change my driver’s license by showing my marriage certificate as well.  I did this by simply going into our local DMV office and paying the $20 fee (other states may be a different amount) to get a replacement license.

My new Social Security Card came in the mail about ten days after I filed for it.  After I received it I was able to change my name on all of my banking account information and other financial documents.  Other places that I needed to change my name, such as utility companies and other bills, I was able to simply call and tell them I was now remarried and request a name change.  None of these required me to show any additional proof of the name change.

Here are a few other places that I had to remember to change my name… on my email accounts, on my resumes, on my business cards, on return address labels, and on my kids records at schools, doctor’s offices, and clubs.

All in all the process was not nearly as complicated as I had feared that it would be. I found that by simply following the simple steps I was able to have my name changed on just about everything within the first month. In fact, I think that it was much easier to change my name on everything then it was for me to get used to saying or signing it. That I am still not used to and may not be for quite sometime to come.
