Our Unique Wedding Vows - For Our Eyes Only

Our wedding vows Brian and I decided from the very beginning that we wanted to write our own wedding vows.

I finished mine almost immediately - I found a sort of template online that had a suggested list of topics to cover. Once I tweaked that, I had some beautiful words written down.

I came across a notebook at the apartment a few months before the wedding that had some stuff scribbled in it, which were Brian’s rough draft. I knew it was wrong to read it, but I did anyway.

Along the way, we both began to feel a little nervous about reciting wedding vows in front of so many people. After all, they were very private words and feelings. So we decided to do the traditional vows at the wedding and just give each other the vows we had written.

The night before the wedding, we exchanged gifts at the rehearsal dinner. Inside the cards we got for each other were our wedding vows. We read the vows we had written for each other and it was a really special experience.

Seeing his intentions and feelings in writing the night before the wedding calmed all my nerves. It also gave me a clearer picture of what our life together forever would look like. As we stood in the church and repeated the traditional vows after the pastor, we were both able to think of the other vows – the more extensive ones - that we had written for our eyes only.

I was organizing a few weekends ago and came across my box of wedding cards. There was the one Brian had gotten me, with his vows tucked neatly inside. I started thinking of finding ways to do something special with them, like framing them and hanging them in our bedroom. I haven’t decided what to do quite yet, but one thing is for sure …I’m always going to remember those vows.
